Plot[]

Ian starts his travels in the Kanto region. Over time, he will go to the other regions of the show, and some only in the games. As he travels, he will make new friends and catch new Pokémon, as he is pitted against the evil organizations of the region.

The franchise progresses through time, most series taking place over the course of a year. As the series progresses, new themes emerge such as emotional growth, personality improvement and more adult themes.

The franchise is designed into several phases. The first Phase follows Ian as a rookie trainer as he makes his way to the world stage. He becomes famous for defeating evil organizations and his overall philosophy for having fun and seeking strong opponents. He blazes forward as a trainer with little slow down. The second phase shows Ian taking the time to slow himself down, re-evaluating what it means to be a trainer and how he can become the greatest trainer. His rivals and enemies become more focused on challenging his way of viewing the world. Team Rocket works in the shadows to rebuild. Phase 3 focuses more away from Ian and more towards the next generation of trainers that he inspires, showing the trainer class as a whole being stronger than when he started. He leads a resistance to defeat Team Rocket once and for all.

The fourth phase takes place "after Ian's journey." Ian takes a backseat to battling, instead working on restructuring the Battle Community as a whole. These episodes focus around the original story, showing events that happened behind the scenes of Ian's journey or focusing on the newest trainers.

Ian makes several travel companions throughout his journey, with various personalities and strengths. Ian interacts and engages with them differently depending on when he meets them in his journey, acting as inspiration, a mentor, and/or a rival to them. As he gets older, he becomes the inspiration for the younger trainers to battle, becoming the trainer to defeat.

There are several spin-off series to focus on other main characters not associated with Ian, focusing on more darker themes and being an exploration of ideals within this established world. The protagonists in spin-offs befriend Ian later on and become featured in the main story.

Trivia[]

  • Many episodes and plot lines are based off the anime counterparts, though there are many based off the games and Pokémon Adventures Manga.
  • The episodes that have the title "Vs. ..." were created with the main plot line, with only a few notable exceptions. Episodes with varying titles were created after the main plot, mostly specials, crossovers and spin-off episodes.
  • This series has the passage of time, where time passes as each series progresses.
    • This means each series builds off the ones before and utilize themes built previously into it.
    • This is based on ever expanding franchises such as Harry Potter and One Piece, which has rich histories and obvious connections from earlier themes later into the franchise.
  • The main series focus more on the standard Pokémon journey while the spin-off series typically focus on specific or more mature themes compared to the standard of Pokémon media.
